Big success for the first event of Hellenic Alliance of Scotland

March 2, 2024Back in September we all witnessed the massive devastation in Thessaly, Greece when it was hit massively by storms Daniel and Elias. Thousands of acres of land were covered in mud. Hundreds of houses were flooded, and households were completely destroyed. Sadly, 17 human lives and thousands of animals were also lost.
Aberdeen Scottish Hellenic Society wanted to do something to help those affected by raising funds as we have done on previous occasions. We thought it was best if we targeted our help and for this reason, we have decided to support the 3rd Palamas Nursery in the Prefecture of Karditsa whose equipment was completely destroyed while the building itself is also showing problems. The prefecture of Karditsa was the one most affected by the floods and the village of Palamas was almost entirely submerged under water.
By the end of October, the total raised by the Society for the appeal, including the £317 from the raffle at the Greek Evening in October 2023, was £1,000. It was a number that exceeded our expectations, and we would like to thank each one of you for your generosity and kindness.
After a consultation with the Head of the Palamas nursery, Mrs Glykeria Papadopoulou, we arranged for the funds to be used to purchase: 6 wooden benches, one touch screen, one professional speakerphone and a microphone.
All the payments have been done directly by the Society and the products have been sent to the school before Christmas holidays.
The school had thanked Aberdeen Scottish Hellenic Society for their help to secure equipment to allow the school to function again after the terrible floods, from their blog and their Facebook page.
In our recent Committee meeting, last week, Mrs Papadopoulou had joined remotely and had the opportunity to thank the Committee in person for the support which had been provided.
The committee would like to thank all of you that made this appeal successful.
