The Aberdeen Hellenic School commenced the first year of its operation on 3rd of November 2019. It is under the umbrella of Aberdeen Scottish Hellenic Society (a registered charity) but it is self operated.

The school runs by a Parents Committee which has a very good co-operation and are always in contact to discuss, organise and provide solutions to any matters that may emerge. The school is based at the premises of Ferryhill Community Centre, in the city centre of Aberdeen and runs every Sunday morning.

 

The school runs in 4 classes.

Nursery class (2-4 years old) - kids are engaged in games played in Greek;

4-6 years old - where kids are exposed gradually in more advanced Greek;

7-15 years old beginners - proper use of language and grammar is taught mainly in English;

7-15 years old advanced - proper use of language and grammar is taught in Greek only.

 

The school staff consists of qualified Greek teachers with a degree in Greek Language Teaching that are also teachers in primary and nursery schools here in Aberdeen. Further, there are assistants that helps the teacher during the class.

 

Through the academic year the Aberdeen Hellenic School organises some interesting activities.

- The design of a Christmas card for Aberdeen Scottish Hellenic Society (ASHS).

- A poster calendar with a group photo of each class.

- A Christmas show

- A Carnival party

- An Easter Holidays event with activities around nature and the environment.

- Celebrations for the National Days for Remembrance (28th of October and 25th of March).

 

Also, for a 3rd year the School runs parents support sessions. The sessions are free, twice a month, and are aiming to support parents with the challenges of parenthood. The group runs by a voluntary Greek therapist.

The school year 2022-2023, for the first time, Aberdeen Hellenic School has organised, once a month, a kids choir and teaching of Greek traditional dances for free to all children and their families.

The school also has a Greek library with more than 200 books, all kind donations of Greek bookshops from Florina - Greece.
