The Aberdeen Scottish Hellenic Society is proud of its record in providing support for all those who want, for one reason or another, to learn some Greek or to develop fully their mastery of the language.
Modern Greek classes for adults were started over40 years ago -just after the funding of the Society- by Dr Loula Solomou-Dalgarno who persuaded the Modern Languages team at Aberdeen FE College to attempt to recruit a Beginners’ class. To their surprise this class was a great success, and the students formed a nucleus which drove the newly formed Aberdeen Scottish Hellenic Society forward. Shortly after Loula had to abandon the classes for health reasons, they collapsed; and on her death there was no longer an opportunity to attend Greek classes. But soon that was to change!
A small group of Loula’s ex-students organised a very successful class taught by Margaret Graham under the auspices of the Aberdeen Scottish Hellenic Society. Tutors were recruited from among the ranks of Greek students at Aberdeen University and the Programme expanded. Even during the difficult days of the Covid lockdown the programme continued as an online one.
For many years until now organiser of the classes is Dr Melvin Dalgarno.
The classes are running once a week from October until Easter. The last 4 years besides the face-to-face classes runs a conversational online class.
