June 24, 2024The Society was formally established in 1980. To celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2020, we were kindly granted a Civic Reception by the Lord Provost of the City of Aberdeen. Unfortunately, that could not take place because of the pandemic.
The Lord Provost generously agreed that we could reschedule for 2024.
The event was held in the Town and County Hall of the old Town House on 7 June. Around 50 old and new members of the Society attended the celebration.
The welcome on behalf of the Lord Provost was given by Councillor Martin Greig who spoke warmly about the Society and its activities, particularly in relation to being a focus for integrating local Greek families into the community.
Hamish Wilson, President of the Society, talked about its history and achievements from its inception to the present day. He presented to Councillor Greig for the Lord Provost a hamper of Greek food and drinks along with a tartan table runner and other items from the Hellenic Alliance of Scotland of which the Society was a founder member. He also presented gifts to the two former Presidents of the Society – Urwin Woodman and Melin Dalgarno – in recognition of all that they had done for the Society since its beginning.
This was followed by a buffet and drinks with an opportunity for those present to catch up with old friends and former members.
A very nice surprise for all the participants which brought memories from the past was a slide show of photographs and other material as well as a folder of items to look at. A big thank you to Mike Leys member of the Society for setting this up.
The evening ended with an excellent musical interlude by Daniil Vasilikis and Foteini Komporozou.
