Annual General Meeting – Thursday 4 September
September 3, 2025
Greek Evening on the 1st of November
October 25, 2025The Aberdeen Hellenic School commenced the sixth year of its operation on 1st September 2024. This academic year the school held thirty-two classes, with the last class on the 29th of June 2025.
The school classes have taken place at Ferryhill Community Centre for 5 years in a row which seems to be the most convenient place for the school's needs, despite the considerable letting cost.
The numbers of our children varied between 30 and 40 throughout the year. Most of the families are Greek or one of the parents being Greek, with one family being Cypriot.
This year the school ran four (3) classes per week:
- 2-6 years old (nursery class) - kids are engaged in games played in Greek.
- 6-15 years old beginners - proper use of language and grammar is taught mainly in English.
- 6-11 years old advanced - proper use of language and grammar is taught in Greek only.
A Parents Committee has been set up for this year too with parents’ representation from all classes. Regular meetings and discussions through a dedicated WhatsApp group have been held throughout the year, to organise and provide solutions to any emerging matters. There was a meeting held with the parents, to discuss further updates related to staffing and explore different options related to how the school would run accordingly.
The school staff consists of two qualified Greek teachers. We managed to cover for one of last year’s teachers that had to go on maternity leave. Furthermore, there are three assistants that help the teacher during the class.
This year we have managed to organise three activities to raise money:
- Design of Christmas cards for Aberdeen Scottish Hellenic Society (ASHS). All classes have added a little something to this effort and the result was very satisfactory. The net profit from the cards’ sale was £36.
- A poster calendar, one for each class. A parent volunteered to do the photo shooting. The net profit from the calendar’s sale was £166.
- In March, the school celebrated the Carnival with a party which the kids enjoyed a lot! The net profit of the party was £84.
Other events
- On the last class before Christmas Santa visited the school giving gifts to all the kids.
- 2 Geography workshops sponsored from ASHS.
- For a fourth year in row, the school ran parents support sessions. The sessions ran for free once a month. The sessions are aiming to support parents with emotional stress and were ran by a volunteer Greek therapist. 8 families attended the sessions.
- We launched a pen pal partnership with the Greek School in Nottingham, fostering cross-cultural friendships and meaningful exchanges between our students.
- We started a great connection with a high school in Ioannina, Greece. Their students sent us a video showing what life is like at their school, and we replied with one of our own. We also gave them a little tour of Aberdeen through a video, introducing our town and sharing some local highlights.
- We’ve raised £1,065 to support our teacher’s daughter, following the sudden loss of her husband due to illness
